Signs and symptoms of acid reflux makes it easier to detect what food may cause you utter discomfort and what you are allowed or recommended to eat.  Symptoms of acid reflux:

  • Bloating
  • Consistent bad breath and bad smelling stools
  • Throat clearing
  • Loss of appetite (due to bloating and difficulty in digestion)
  • Radiating pain in throat, chest and stomach
  • Occasional heartburn attacks
  • Frequent passing of gas
  • Frequent burping or belching
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Anxiety, insomnia (due to pain in the stomach from acid reflux)
  • Depression
  • Bitter taste in mouth

  • You may experience Problems in swallowing
  • A tendency for food regurgitation and may feel uncomfortable and painful

  • Irritation from some foods and drinks (chocolate, nicotine , cigarettes , coffee or any caffeinated drinks or food , carbonated fizzy drinks, tea, herbed dishes, banana, lemon, lime, oranges, pepper, Mexican or Indian dishes that are so rich in spices, cranberry, mint, garlic, onions, chilli, chilli peppers, chilli powder, peppermint flavours in some food may cause irritation from some people, black pepper, sugar, too sweet foods,  vinegar, tomato sauce, tomatoes, pineapple, citrus juice, ketchup, pizza, beans, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, soda, full fat diets, dairy products, fried chicken, French fries, onion rings,  sour cream, cream cheese, mustard, whole milk although not all sufferers from acid reflux are intolerant of milk or dairy products, beer, wine, liquor, raisins, carrots, kale, Brussels sprouts)
  • Difficulty swallowing and digesting
  • Sometimes you may feel sudden abdominal pain
  • Sometimes you may suffer from sore throat from too much acid
  • Feeling of chest pain that is equivalent to a heart attack kind of chest pain
  • irritation to spicy, rich, fatty or oily dishes
  • frequent feeling of gassiness or frequent passing of gas
  • dizziness and lethargy
  • irritation to major herb triggers such as cumin, ginger, curry powder, nutmeg, cinnamon powder and all other powdered form of herbs can also be the culprit
  • irritation to some bread that triggers acid reflux such as whole wheat bread and refined breads
  • irritation to some drinks that triggers acid reflux such as mineral or sparkling water, sparkling juice, colas
  • inability to sleep well at night

Note that some foods may not tally with what others find irritating. Sometimes the food that triggers to others may not be the same trigger for some people.
